Results
The
results achieved through the execution of the Hotline
Service so far were as follows:

Raising the community
awareness toward the environmental
problems.

Gathering data about
the number of plaintiffs, types and places where these
environmental problems are compiled.

Producing a database,
reports and statistics which help to depict the
maltreated areas and in project
evaluation.
-
Highlighting the
industrial environmental problems in Greater Cairo in
order to assist the concerned authorities to rectify
the problems
raised
- Creating a direct dialogue
through organizing the public hearings about
major issues and also creating an indirect
dialogue through the response to the
plaintiffs

Accomplishments

Since the actual start of the
Hotline Environmental Service Unit in August 18, 1998
till may 15, 2002 , the service received more than
22000calls about environmental problems from the
residents of Greater Cairo. Only 5073 calls have
been registered as environmental complaints:

3353 Cairo
-
1270 Giza,
-
450 Kalioubeya.
The rest of the
22000 complaints have been either:
-
Solved
directly by the trained telephone operator
-
Simply out of
the authorized scope of the partners.
-
Duplicated
complaints from different complainers

The major
environmental complaints were:
-
Solid waste and garbage: [3477] calls of
the complaints.
-
Air pollution: [2982] calls of the
complaints.
-
Noise pollution: [1014] calls of the
complaints.
-
Water pollution: [189] calls of the
complaints.

Note: These
statistics are not representing the actual complaints
number as we have many complaints can be classified into
various pollution types in one complaint (Air pollution
and Noise pollution, e.g. workshops)
