In that manner, no less than 20.000 young volunteers participated in the campaign all over the country to make their local communities cleaner and healthier and consequently achieve the goals of the sustainable development giving a good example of the effective co-operation done among the three development partners; the governmental sector, the private sector and the local communities.

“Clean Up the World” in Cairo:

This year, AOYE targeted Elsokar we Ellemoon (Sugar & Lemon) area in Old Cairo district to implement the “Clean Up the World-2004” campaign which was honored by the attendance of his Excellency Dr. abdull Raheem Shihata; the Minister of Local development and representatives of the Australian Embassy in Egypt, the Ministry of Youth, the Ministry of Environment and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agent (EEAA), in addition to a wide diverse range of spectacle personalities, media men and environmentally

concerned persons and the participation of 350 environmentally concerned young volunteers. The campaign started directly after the Opening Conference held at the Celebration Hall in Amr Ibnulaas Mosque.

Field Work:

1- Mapping the Area

The field team of AOYE mapped the target area spotting lights on the locations of the accumulated waste that need to be cleaned, in addition to Exit & Entrance Locations to ensure the smooth flow of the traffic to avoid the traffic jam in those locations.

2- Implementing a Public Awareness Campaign:

Some Publications were designed and disseminated among the residents of the target area through home-visits to raise their awareness of their local environmental problems, to familiarize them with the activities of the AOYE to gather the most available numbers of the governmental and the non-governmental organizations and the young concerned volunteers and to mobilize their role in developing positive environmental activities in the framework of the “Clean Up the World-2004” campaign; the residents of the target area were invited to take part in these activities, celebrate the Clean Up the World Weekend and more important to work on sustaining their local environment in a cleaner and healthier conditions.

3- The Opening Conference:

The AOYE staff-in-charge and some of the concerned volunteers headed to the target area to declare the actual launching of the campaign by implementing some of the pre-identified activities. After that, some of them headed to the Celebration Hall in Amr Ibnulaas Mosque to witness the official launching of the campaign which was declared by Dr. Emad Adly; the Chairman of the AOYE. In his statement, Dr. Adly gave a general idea about the AOYE and its activities since its inception in 1993. He also stressed the role of the Local Initiative Facility for Urban Environments (LIFE) which works in the framework of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and hosted by the AOYE. Dr. Adly highlighted the support provided by (LIFE) to the CUW campaign in Egypt since its very beginning in 1993.

This conference gathered a crowd of officials headed by his Excellency the Ambassador of Australia who praised the role of the AOYE in implementing the CUW campaign in Egypt for that long time.

The conference was also honored by the presence of the representative of LIFE program in Egypt who concentrated on the importance of the co-operation in achieving the development of the Urban Communities and the role of the mutual dialogue in reaching this co-operation.

The respectable members of The Parliament, The Legislative Council and The Local Council of the target area attended that conference and declared their appreciation of the AOYE role in developing the area and improving the living conditions of its residents.

The participating representatives of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agent (EEAA) and the supporting partners (Mobinil and El-Gouna) expressed their admiration of the AOYE exerted efforts in conserving the local environment and leading the other NGOs to achieve the required development.

4- Distributing the Young Volunteers over the Target Area:

The AOYE team explored the target area and divided it into 14 parts depending on the nature of the required activities. Then, the team divided the volunteers into 14 consequent groups.

After that, the AOYE team held a meeting at the office headquarter to put the campaign activities into the proper order considering the 14 working groups. This meeting was followed by another meeting with the leaders of the 14 groups in which each leader was charged with a certain duty to be accomplished in the framework of that campaign.

5- Waste Lifting:

The Cleaning Tools were disseminated among the volunteers listed in each of the 14 groups working at the target area to collect the waste scattered in the streets and the alleys of that

area and gather it after that in the Waste Bags to be removed away using the trucks of the Arab Office for Youth and Environment (AOYE) and those of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agent (EEAA).

In addition to this, the volunteers participated in cleaning the dumps that exist in the area. The collected waste was estimated by about 2 tons. Thus, the cleaning activities could provide a solution for one of the persistent problems suffered by the residents of the area.

6- Tree Pruning:

Though classified as one of the poor urban communities, Elsokar we Ellemoon (Sugar & Lemon) area is distinguished by plenty of trees. Yet, being un-pruned, those trees caused a problem of another kind.

Thus the young volunteers, supported by the EEAA, worked on pruning the existing trees then collecting the waste that came as a result of the Tree Pruning.

7- Bricks Painting:

After pruning the trees and collecting the waste, the young volunteers worked on painting the bricks in black & white a matter that added to the beauty of the streets and the alleys.

    8- Tree Planting and Irrigating:

The volunteers planted more than 50 trees in the target area; in the small locations that lack the presence of the trees. In addition to this, they watered the long existing ones.

    9- Maintaining the Lamp-posts:
All of the existing lamp-posts were fixed and maintained, in full co-operation with the local executive committees especially that of the District Council of Old Cairo, to ensure lights of high quality to lighten the target area

His excellency Dr. abdull Raheem Shihata; the Minister of Local development and a crowd of spectacle personalities and media men toured the area during executing the field work which gave the participating volunteers a big push forward.
