The problems of
Solid Waste Management (garbage) has become one of
Egypt’s main environmental concerns. Cairo, which is
Egypt’s largest city and home to approximately 16
million people, have been suffering from the problems
created by the accumulation of tons of unused wastes.
Daily, tons of solid wastes are being collected and
dumped in areas outside Cairo, to be burnt without
recycling.
The
collection and the disposal of garbage not only exerts
pressure on garbage collectors (Zabaleen), but also on
the means of transportation needed to transport this
garbage to dumping
sites outside Cairo. This has led the cleaning
authorities to continue the search for new dumping sites
far from the city, which in turn leads to more pressure
on the means of transportation. Thus, solid wastes are
not only a problem in their collection, but also a
problem in their disposal.

Egypt is one of the countries
that produce huge amounts of solid wastes. About 11.8
million tons of garbage are produced annually in Egypt,
which means that every square kilometer of residential
area produces 198 tons per year. This is considered the
highest rate worldwide.
Clean up the World (CUW) is an
event, which is designed to focus international
attention on the problems of garbage and solid waste
that are affecting the state of the world's environment.
Volunteers work together in their own community to carry
out local clean-up activities, uniting with like-minded
groups throughout the globe in a massive worldwide
clean-up of the natural environment. Clean Up the World
(CUW) has grown from the simple suggestion of an
international clean-up to the reality of a major annual
environmental campaign

AOYE
has been the only Egyptian representative in
participating in the CUW campaign since its
establishment 1993. AOYE has targeted over the
years since September 1993 many suffering
districts all over Egypt (more than 18 Egyptian
Governorates) |
