 RAED Profile

 

RAED is a network of Arab non- governmental organizations including more than 200 NGOs from Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait, Quatar, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.

The objectives of the organization is to coordinate between regional community organizations in the exchange of skills, experiences and information. To create new grassroots activities to be implemented by

RAED NGOs members. To encourage the inclusion of community participation projects in government programs to achieve sustainable development. And finally, to gather, disseminate and exchange regional and international data on different environmental and developmental problems.

 

 

Achievments

 


 

 

The secretariat of the network is the Arab office for Youth and Environment (AOYE) has worked extensively with the national coordinators of RAED to ensure the coordination among the NGOs members in the network. This active coordination has been successful in making the network an influential actor in the field of environment throughout the Middle East region such that now :

 

 

 

 

RAED has been granted an observant status in the Council for the Arab Ministers of Environment concerned with the environment in the Arab League. And on the international level, RAED has been granted consultative status with the ECOSOC (Economic and Social council of the UN).

RAED has participated in several international NGO fora and conferences on the international level such as:

The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1992

  • The International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), Cairo, 1994

  • United Nations World Summit on Social Development (WSSD), Copenhagen, 1995

  • The United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing, 1995

  • The second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements HABITAT II, Istanbul, Turkey, 1996.

Also, the network has attended:

  • The forth meeting for the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) , New York , 18 April-3 May 1996

  • The United Nations Roundtable Concerned with lending assistance to the Palestinian people, Cairo 1996

  • The Rio + 5 Forum, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 1997

  • Regional Meeting for Arab Youth Strategy for Environmental Action, Egypt, 1997

  • Global Knowledge 1997, Canada, 1997

  • General Assembly Special Session (Earth Summit II), New York, 1997.
