INTRODUCTION

Egypt’s environment issues and problems are a reflection of need for sound management of our water, land, and human resources, especially in view of growth in population and rise in living standards.

Egypt’s primary source of water in the River Nile, which provides the country with 97% of its water resources requirement.
Studies and reports have shown that the major causes of water waste in Egypt are improper use, network leakage, poor quality of plumbing fixtures and devices, and inadequate maintenance.
In view of Egypt’s water problems, the following options are being considered for future strategies

Promotion of efficiency of irrigation methods and techniques.

bullet

Change and diversification of crops.

bullet

Reduction of water waste in households and public buildings and promotion of conservation through community efforts.

bullet

Promotion of industry development, especially with regard to water conservation devises.
 

National Community Water Conservation Program (NCWCP)

The program in a partnership between three entities:

1. The Social Planning, Analysis and Administration Consultants (SPAAC), a Private firm in social research and development.

2. the Arab Office for Youth and Environment (AOYE), a none governmental organization that has organized and implemented various activities on the local level related to the community mobilization and environmental issues.

 

3. the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), an American that has implemented successful water conservation program and provides the technology transfer and staff training for NCWCP.
 

Mission of the NCWCP

The mission of NCWCP is to address the problem of potable water loss, mainly, though conservation activities directed at the national and local levels.
Theses activities will demonstrate the social, technical, and economic feasibility of water conservation in Egypt and will support long term conservation efforts.
Reducing potable water loss through behavioral change, industry development, and other activities will allow allocated funds, otherwise used for expansion of existing services, to be used towards rehabilitation and maintenance of water supply system. Funds would also be made available to supply water to areas currently in need.

AOYE Local Action selected among the 30 sponsored local action to attend the 4th WWF. and selected as one of the thirty finalists to compete for the Kyoto World Water Grand Prize
